General surgery covers a wide territory — hernias, the gallbladder, the colon, the pancreas, the thyroid and adrenal glands, and surgery for cancer. Wherever possible we use minimally invasive techniques, which usually means smaller incisions and a faster recovery.
What a general surgeon actually does
Most people are referred to a general surgeon for something specific: a hernia that keeps bulging, gallstones that ache after dinner, a growth found on a scan, or a diagnosis of cancer.
Our role is to work out whether an operation is the right answer at all — and if it is, which operation, done which way, and when. Summit Surgical Institute can perform complex surgical oncology operations, including the surgical treatment of breast cancer, as well as routine procedures that are done and home the same day.
Many of these operations can be performed laparoscopically, through several small incisions rather than one large one. Dr. Roxana Kline is a member of both the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.
